CCMO reviews research on cell therapy, gene therapy, other products that specifically influence the functioning of the genetic material and medicinal products with GMO
CCMO’s website clarifies when CCMO is the designated review committee for certain types of research.
This concerns research in the field of cell therapy, gene therapy, other products that specifically influence the functioning of the genetic material and medicinal products containing genetically modified organisms (GMO).
For certain types of research, CCMO rather than an accredited MREC is the designated review committee. This concerns research with specific ethical, legal or social aspects and research involving scarce expertise. This is laid down in the Central Review Decree [Besluit Centrale Beoordeling].
Because of the rapidly changing research field, CCMO has further specified the information on its website about the abovementioned types of research. Where possible, the information contains definitions used in the European Union. The categories of research are described in more detail and include examples of products used in clinical research involving human subjects:
- Somatic cell therapy medicinal products and tissue-engineered products
- Other cell therapy 'products'
- Gene therapy medicinal products
- CRISPR-CAS
- Antisense oligonucleotides and RNA interference
- Other products that specifically influence the functioning of the genetic material
- Naked DNA / (m)RNA
- Medicinal products containing a GMO
Due to overlap between these categories, a product may fall into several of the abovementioned categories. It is also possible that a product cannot yet be clearly placed in one of the above categories. If in doubt, please contact CCMO.
