Naked DNA / (m)RNA

Naked DNA and (m)RNA do not completely fulfill the criteria in the BCB. However, it does concern products that contain recombinant nucleic acid. Research on these products is reviewed by CCMO.

Naked DNA (DNA vaccines / DNA plasmids)

Studies with naked DNA (DNA vaccines / DNA plasmids) of biological and synthetic origin, including analogues with chemical modifications to increase the stability or targeting of certain tissues, are reviewed by CCMO. Studies with DNA vaccines against infectious diseases are also reviewed by CCMO.

Products with naked DNA are not administered via a (viral) vector, but for example via injection or tattoo, with or without drug delivery vehicles such as nanoparticles, chemical polymers (e.g. polyethylenimine) and lipophilic compounds.

These products are not considered as GMO by CCMO, but a GMO permit is still required.

Naked (m)RNA (RNA vaccines)

Studies with naked RNA (RNA vaccines) of biological and synthetic origin, including analogues with chemical modifications to increase the stability or targeting of certain tissues, are reviewed by CCMO. Studies with (m)RNA vaccines against infectious diseases are also reviewed by CCMO.

Products with naked (m)RNA are not administered via a (viral) vector, but for example via injection or tattoo, with or without drug delivery vehicles such as nanoparticles, chemical polymers (e.g. polyethylenimine) and lipophilic compounds.

As far as known, no GMO permit is required for research on products with (m)RNA. If in doubt, please contact the Gene Therapy Office.
