Royal decoration for outgoing CCMO Chairman Joop van Gerven

CCMO Chairman Prof. Dr. Joop van Gerven was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau on Friday, May 9, 2025. He received his royal decoration from the hands of Mayor of The Hague and former committee member Mr J.H.C. van Zanen.

The presentation took place during the symposium 'Academic development of medicinal products: bottlenecks and opportunities' in the Stadsgehoorzaal in Leiden, with which van Gerven bid farewell to CCMO (Central Committee on Research with Humans). Prof van Gerven had been chairman of the CCMO since 2016.

The award is mainly based on the great significance that Van Gerven has had for development of medicinal products in the Netherlands in general and the role that ethical review plays in it. He has exerted his influence mainly in his positions as CCMO Chairman, as Research Director CNS at the Centre for Human Drug Research in Leiden and as Professor of Clinical Neuropsychopharmacology at Leiden University Medical Centre.

Van Gerven will step down as CCMO Chairman on 1 July. He will be succeeded by the one of the three current vice-chairs,  Professor Michaël Boele van Hensbroek.
